Muchos armamos modelos como juguetes de niños, pero también todos tuvimos un momento en que dejamos de jugar para dedicarnos más seriamente al hobbie, recuerdas ese día en que dijiste esto del modelismo me gusta en serio? / Many scale modellers have started building models as a game, using them as toys when child, but at some point in their lives they have stopped playing and have started building in a more professional way… do you remember that transition?
ESP: Es una excelente pregunta y lo recuerdo muy bien. Cuando regrese del Ejercito, a la edad de 20, inicie un pequeño club de modelismo que llamé “Plein Ciel” (Full Sky), que era el nombre de mi boina militar… Comenzamos a participar y ganar muchos trofeos en algunos concursos de modelismo. En ese momento, las cosas se pusieron serias. Luego de unos años, nos separamos por diversas razones, familia, trabajo, mudanzas… En un concurso conocí al presidente del IPMS Francia (A principios de los 90’s), el quedo impresionado por mi vision del modelismo y me convenció de unirme al IPMS. “Te enviare los papeles para que te registres tan pronto vuelva a Paris” me dijo. Una semana después, recipe una carta y el sobre estaba vacio!!!
ENG: That’s a very good question and I remember it well. Back from army, at the age of 20, I created a small modelling club that I called “Plein Ciel” (full sky), the name of the brand of my military beret…We started to participate to some model shows and won a lot of trophies. At this moment, things became serious. After a few years, the team split for many reason, family, job, relocations… I met one day during an exhibition (beginning of 90’s), the president of IMPS France, he was impressed by my vision of modelling. He convinced me to join IPMS, “I’ll send you a complete file for registration as I’m back to Paris”. One week later, I received a letter, the envelope was empty!!!
Que cantidad de maquetas estimas que tienes en tu “Stock” sin armar? / How many kits do you have in your stash waiting to be built?
ESP: Tengo aproximadamente unos 25 kits esperando para “despegar” hacia las vitrinas de sus nuevos dueños. Pero también tengo una colección personal de raros modelos industriales y hechos a mano que guardo celosamente, todos en escala 1/48 (Trimaster, Atelier Noix, JMGT…)
ENG: I have something like 25 kits waiting to take off to their new owners’ showcases. But I also have a personal collection of rares industrial and handwork modeles I keep preciously, all in 48 scale.(TRIMASTER, ATELIER NOIX, JMGT…)
Elije un elemento del modelismo, una herramienta, accesorio, pintura, etc, que haya cambiado la forma de terminar un modelo o bien tu forma de trabajar… algo que a tu entender haya revolucionado el hobbie. / Choose an element of scale modelling (a tool, accessory, paint, etc) that has changed your way of working or the way you finish a model… something that you believe has been revolutionary for this hobby.
ESP: Sin dudas mis dos aerógrafos, Harder & Steenbeck, no tengo limites con ellos, puedo pintar lo que sea. Estuve trabajando por 20 años con el aerógrafo AZTEC, es inigualable.
ENG: No doubt for it, that’s my two airbrushes, HARDER & STEENBECK , I have no limit with them, I can paint everything. I ‘ve been working for 20 years with AZTEC airbrush, it’s unparalleled
Te dedicas full-time al armado de modelos? (En caso de responder no, que otra ocupación tienes y cómo manejas tus horarios para poder armar tus modelos?) / How many hours do you dedicate to this hobby? is it a full time activity? if not, how do you manage your time?
ESP: Es una actividad a tiempo completo, es mi trabajo! Paso cerca de 9 o 10 horas diarias en mi mesa de trabajo, las cuales tengo que combinar con mi familia, deportes, etc… Es mucho trabajo, 6 días a la semana.
ENG: It’s a full time activity, it’s my job ! So I spend about 9 or 10 hours a day on my work bench that I have to mix to family life, sport etc… It’s a lot of job, 6 days a week.
Podrías compartir con nosotros una foto de tu taller/estación de trabajo? / Could you please share with us a picture of your workstation?
ESP: Claro!

Recuerdas cual fue tu primer maqueta y como la conseguiste? Fue un regalo, la compraste tu mismo? / Do you remember which was your first model and how did you get it? Did you buy it or it was a gift?
ESP: Era muy pequeño, quizás unos 7 años, no recuerdo con exactitud, pero estoy seguro que fue algo a escala 1/72 – 1/76 (Airfix, Matchbox, Esci…). Seguramente fue un regalo de mi abuelo quien me contaba como el habia luchado contra el Wehrmacht durante la campaña de Italia a la edad de 41. Yo estaba fascinado, el aun es mi heroe y una especie de guia espiritual a mi lado cuando trabajo.
ENG: I was a little kid so I don’t really remember, may be 7 years old but I’m sure it was 1/72 – 1/76 armor modelling ( AIRFIX , MATCHBOX, ESCI…) Certainly a gift of my grand father who relate me how he fought against the Wehrmacht during the campaign of Italy at the age of 41. I was fascinating, he is still my hero and a kind of spiritual guide by my side when I work.
Tienes idea que cantidad de maquetas llevas armadas hasta el día de hoy? / Do you have any idea of how many models have you built so far?
ESP: Wahoo… desde los 7 a los 49… unos 1000 tal vez?
ENG: Wahoo… 7 to 49, may be 1000?
Cual sería tu rutina modelística, si la hay, o que tiempo de tu día dedicas al modelismo? tienes un horario preferido para sentarte a trabajar, como ser la noche por ejemplo? / Tell us about you modelling routine, do you have a special time of day? at night for example?
ESP: Empiezo a trabajar a las 8 am. Paro a las 12 para ir al gimnasio y estoy de vuelta en la mesa de trabajo a eso de las 14 hrs luego de almorzar. Hago un descanso a las 6 para pasar tiempo con mi familia. Ocasionalmente paso 1 o 2 horas mas despues de las 21 para trabajar en cosas pequeñas o colocar calcas por ejemplo, a esa hora todo esta tranquilo a mi alrededor, amo ese momento.
ENG: I start to work at 8 in the morning, I stop at 12 to go to the gym. I’m back on the workbench at 2 p.m after lunch. I make a break at 6 to share some time with my family. I often spend 1 or 2 hours and often more after 9 to work on small parts or decals for example, everything is quiet around me, I love this moment.
Cuál es tu etapa preferida del modelismo y porque? (compra, investigación, armado, detallado, pintura, wheathering, etc). / Which is your favorite process when building a model and why? (Buying, investigation, building, painting, weathering, etc).
ESP: Para ser honesto, realmente disfruto cada momento, pero si tengo que elegir uno, seria la cara de mis clientes cuando les entrego un modelo… Uno de ellos me dijo que ofrezco algunos sueños… Te aseguro que no tengo amistad con sus esposas!
ENG: To be honest, I really appreciate every moment, but if I have to choose, it would be the light or shining stars I can see in the eyes of my clients when I delivery the kit… One of them told me that I am offering some dreams…Be sure that I have no friendship with their wives!
En que proyecto o maqueta estas trabajando actualmente? / Which project or model are you working on now?
ESP: Actualmente estoy trabajando en un F-104 G de Hasegawa con la correción de Daco y varias resinas de Aires! Esten atentos a Oscar Sierra Modelling!

Que tanto te gusta detallar un modelo? Y qué importancia le das a fidelidad histórica cuando armas modelos para ti? / When building models, are the details important to you? how important is the historical fidelity of a model?
ESP: Claro que es importante porque tomo muchas fotografías tanto para mis clientes como para las revistas para mostrarles lo que hice y cómo lo hice. Detallando es la mejor manera de explicar y compartir tips que yo cree hace mucho tiempo. Me agrada ver que mucha gente acepte mis consejos y los ponga en práctica, es mi forma de aportar algo positivo al hobby.
Debo ser un afortunado porque poseo muchos libros, que me permiten estudiar a fondo cada avion y me ayuda a hacer mis modelos mas reales.
ENG: Sure it is because I take a lot of photo for both magazine or clients so I have to prove what I made and how I did it. Detailing is one of the best way to explain and share tips I create since a long time ago. I’m glad to see many people adopted them, it’s a manner to bring something positive to modelling. I must be lucky because I have a lot of books, it allow me to study aircrafts with a deep intention of making something as real as possible
Todos tenemos un avión que es nuestra debilidad… cual es tu avión favorito? / Everybody has a favorite plane, … which one is yours and why?
ESP: Que verguenza, mi avian favorito es muy común, es el 109… Empezó su carrera durante la guerra de España hacia 1945 y mas. Lucho en cada frente, a veces con colores extranjeros. Los mejores Aces anotaron con el 109… y que decir sobre el sonido del motor…
ENG: Shame on me, my favorite plane is very commonplace, it’s the 109… It started is career during the Spanish war to 1945 and more . He fought on every front, sometime under foreign colours. The best aces scored with it, and what about the sound of the engine…
Que opinión te merecen los concursos? Te gusta concursar o te gusta ir solo a mirar y charlar con otros modelistas? / What do you think about scale model contests? do you like to participate or just go there to see some models and speak with friends and other modellers?
ESP: Con el tiempo, aprendi que la forma de ganar mas y mas enemigos es participando en concursos… Por eso prefiero ir como “Turista” y pasar un buen rato con otros modelistas.
ENG: With the experience, I learned that the best way to have more and more enemies is to participate to contest… So I prefer to go there as a tourist and meet all the people I know (a lot) and share good time with them.

ESP: Hace un año abrí una pagina de Facebook, Oscar Sierra Modelling. Pueden seguir mis trabajos allí, ver paso a paso completos y también modelos terminados.
ENG: One year ago, I opened a Facebook page, “Oscar Sierra Modelling”. You can follow my stuff, some work in progress and there are albums with complete step by step.
Tienes un modelista de referencia, alguien que admires, que te guste seguir sus trabajos, que te incentiva a la hora de mejorar tus modelos? Puedes recomendarnos algún trabajo en particular de ese modelista? / Do you have any modeller as a referent? someone you admire that motivates you to improve your models? Can you recommend us a particular work of that modeller?
ESP: No tengo un modelista referente en el hobby, pero hay 2 personas que admiro mucho, Koike Shigeo y Claes Sundin. Quede impresionado con la exactitud y el sentido artístico de su trabajo. También me fascinan algunos modelistas que hacen figuras, con gran habilidad para la pintura al oleo.
ENG: Oddly, I have no referent modeller in the hobby, but there are two persons I admire a lot, Koike SHIGEO and Claes SUNDIN . These two guy kill me by the accuracy and the artistic sens of their artwork. I’m also fascinating by some figures modeler with great proficiency of oil paint.
Según tu forma de verlo, el modelísmo es un hobby o es una forma mas de arte? / From your point of view, scale modelling is just a hobby or it can be consider it as “art”?
ESP: Creo que realmente es un arte cuando adquieres cierto nivel solo con una condición, haber comenzado el modelísmo como un hobbie… quiero decir, disfrutar las primeras etapas de aprendizaje e ir mejorando con el tiempo hasta que te conviertes en un gran modelista, es un largo camino.
ENG: I think it’s really a fine art when you reach a certain level by only one condition, starting modelling as an hobby… I mean, taking first some pleasure with good practice and make it better and better until it makes you a great modeller, it’s a long way.
Tienes algún otro pasatiempo además del modelísmo como la fotografía o la pintura? / Do you have any other hobby besides scale modelling? such as photography, painting, etc?
ESP: Tengo varios hobbies pero ninguno de ellos relacionados con el arte. Por ejemplo, me enamore completamente de Andaloucía, siento una verdadera pasión por esta region, un lugar donde espero pasar el resto de mi vida.
ENG: I have several hobbies but none of them are in relation with art. For example, I completely fell in love with Andalousia, a real passion for this region, a place where I hope ending my life.
Panelado con oleos (a la antigua) o con los nuevos “washes”? / Panel lines with oils (Old school) or with new products ?
ESP: Solo uso oleos, son muy versátiles y puedes mezclarlos entre ellos para obtener los colores que necesites.
ENG: I only use oil, it hollow to mix them together and obtain the shade you need.
Que técnica consideras que no puede faltar a la hora de darle vida a un modelo? / What technique do your consider essential when giving life to a model?
ESP: Desde hace mucho tiempo, cuando armaba militaria, siempre trate de reproducir el material. De ser capaz de crear la illusion de representar el material con técnicas de pintura es lo principal desde mi punto de vista. Hay algunos productos que están de moda para hacer “Efectos de pintura”, con ellos los modelos parecen “Cup Cakes” sin embargo hay grandes modelistas detrás de eso, y nunca extend porque ellos no usan sus habilidades para hacer efectos mucho mas realistas en sus modelos.
ENG: Since a long time ago when I was modelling armour, I always search to reproduce the material. To be able to create an illusion of material with painting technics is the must from my point of view. There are actually some new “fashion paint effects” , modeles looks like “cup cake” yet they are good technicians behind. I never understand why these chaps don’t use all their skills to approach more realistic aspect.
Que crees que opina tu familia o amigos sobre esta locura que tenemos por el plástico? Te han dicho algo alguna vez? / How do you think your family and friends feel about this “love” for plastic? have they told you something about this?
ESP: Mi familia respeta mi trabajo, hice de mi hobby un trabajo, y ellos creen que soy afortunado por eso. Sobre mis amigos, son todos modelistas, ellos se interesan en mi carrera como modelista profesional y yo comparto con ellos mis consejos.
ENG: My family respect my job, I made my hobby a job, so they think I’m lucky for that. About my friends, they are all modellers, so it’s their interest to see me following a career as professional modeller develop my tips and share with them…
Cual es tu fabricante de maquetas preferido? / Which is your favorite manufacturer?
ESP: Evergreen! Mi corazón también late por Zvezda, Tamiya, Skei Mura, Airfix, Hasegawa por la historia de esas marcas… Elegir una es imposible, cada marca tiene sus propias cualidades que me provocan asombrosas sensasiones!
ENG: EVERGREEN! My heart beat also for ZVEZDA, TAMIYA, ZUKEI MURA, AIRFIX, HASEGAWA for the history of the brand… Making a choice is impossible, each brand has is own qualities that procure me amazing sensations.
Que periodo, región o industria de la aviación es tu preferido a la hora de un proyecto y cuál el menos? por que? / Which period, region or industry of the aviation is your favorite one when building a model or starting a project? and what is your least favorite? why?
ENG: Principalmente estoy interesado en la WW2, ciertamente por que mi nación fue completamente destruida, mas por el Ejercito Americano que por los Alemanes… y tal vez por que my familia sufrió esta guerra en el norte de Africa (Algier) y al sur de Francia. Tres de mis antepasados lucharon contra el enemigo, dos de ellos murieron en su M-8 Greyhound durante una emboscada en Sicilia. Pero no tengo preferencia por un avian específico, cada modelo es un desafío, siempre tratando de reproducir el material y la ambientación adecuada con delicadas técnicas de pinturas.
ENG: I’m mostly interest by the WWII period, certainly because my nation has been completely destroyed, most by American army than the German one…And may be because my family incur this war in North Africa ‘(Algier) and south of France. Three of my ancestors fought against the enemy, two of them died in their M-8 GREYHOUND during an ambush in Sicily. But I don’t prefer a specific theater or type of aircraft, each modele is a challenge always keeping in mind to reproduce the material and the right vibe with fine paint technics.
Fotograbados y resinas ó scratch, tienes alguna preferencia? / Photo Etched and resins or scratch building… do you have any preference?
ESP: Scratch es el verdadero lado del modelismo, es gratificante y tengo un sensación de hacer un buen trabajo! Lo mejor para mi es combinar scratch con fotograbados pre-pintados de Eduard.
ENG: Scratchbuilt is one of the true side of modelling, it’s rewarding and I have a real feeling of making good job! The best for me is to combine scratcbuilt with an EDUARD pre painted dashboard.
Te has frustrado con el armado de algún modelo? lograste terminarlo? o decidiste armar otro y esperar a que salga un molde mas nuevo? / Have you ever felt frustrated when building a model? did you finished it or decided to build another one? did you wait for a new one to be released?
ESP: Recuerdo un trabajo de scratch impresionante, detallado y correcciones tanto en el interior como en el exterior de un kit completamente en resina a escala 1/48, un Focke Wulf 200 Condor para Replic, una revista francesa con la que trabaje. Al momento de pegar el fuselaje, salió el mismo kit de Trumpeter al mercado… Nunca lo termine y se lo regale a un buen amigo.
ENG: I remember making an insane scratcbuilt job of detailing and corrections inside and outside an 1/48 full resin kit of FOCKE WULF 200 CONDOR for REPLIC, a French magazine I worked with, at the moment I glue the fuselage, the TRUMPETER kit arrived on the market. .. I never finished it and gave it to good friend.
Hay algo que no te guste hacer cuando estas armado un modelo, como ser lijar, pintar ruedas, repanelar, etc? / Is there any activity you do not enjoy when building? such as sanding, painting, painting wheels, rescribing panels lines, etc?
ESP: Amo todos los procesos del modelismo, incluso si algunos son mas commodes que otros. El weathering es mas agradable comparado con reescribir paneles no?
ENG: I do love everything in modelling even if some steps are more comfortable than others, weathering is more pleasant compare rescribing panel lines isn’t it?

ESP: No me vas a creer, no tengo ningún modelo terminado en casa! Cada vez que termino uno, tengo que entregárselo a su nuevo dueño.
ENG: You won’t believe it… I don’t have any finished modele at home! Each time I finished one, I have to delivery it at his new owner’s home.
Cómo te definirías… un contador de remaches, apegado a la realidad dimensional e histórica o un modelista con algunas licencias, más relajado, de los que piensan “si se ve como un Spit`, entonces es un Spit`!” / How do you define yourself; as a rivet counter devoted to dimensional and historical reality or a relaxed modeller with some permissions? someone who thinks “if it looks like a Spit, so it is a Spit”
ESP: Soy un modelista relajado, me gusta agregar detalles, mejorar un kit con pequeños detalles agregados y realizar un buen trabajo de pintura y weathering, acorde al teatro de operaciones en el cual se encontraba ese avión. Los contadores de remaches nunca muestran sus modelos y cuando lo hacen, no sabes si reírte o llorar. Ellos no son mis amigos.
ENG: I’m relaxed modeller. I like to add some details, making a kit better with small modifications and giving a good paint job with the most accurate weathering related to the operation theater. Rivet counter have two specific aspects: first, they never show their modeles and when they do it, you hesitate between crying or laughing. They are not my friends.
Últimamente el mundo del modelismo ha crecido en técnicas y productos… eres de los que se mantiene fiel a la vieja escuela, que mantienen sus técnicas anteriores o de los que están al día sobre las últimas novedades del mercado, probando siempre nuevos productos y técnicas? / Lately the modeller’s world has changed and improved regarding techniques and products, do you stay loyal to the old school and keep your previous techniques? or… are you informed about the latest releases and try them?
ESP: Si quieres progresar, tienes que probar todo, siempre tratando de respetar tus propias técnicas. En Francia decimos “no cambias un equipo ganador” pero no excluye probar nuevas técnicas o productos, ser consiente es la mejor manera de enriquecer tus habilidades como modelista.
ENG: If you want to progress, you have to try almost everything always keeping your own old school technics. In France, we say “ you don’t change a winning team” but it doesn’t exclude trying new skills or products, being aware is the best way to enrich your modelling practice.
Que le dirías al modelista que recién comienza, cuales serian tus palabras de aliento o consejos para el?/ What can you tell people that are entering to the modelling world? Any advise or words of encouragement?
ESP: Comenzar con buenos kits de plástico. Los libros son lo mejor para aprender sobre aviones y entender como funcionan (Pintura, weathering, etc). Un modelista con fuertes conocimientos sobre el tema le hace frente a un contador de remaches!!!
ENG: Well, first start with good all plastic kits. Books are the best to learn about aircraft and understand how they works (painting, weathering…). It makes a modeller with a strong knowledge front of rivet counter!!!
